5 Tips for Staying Healthy While Traveling

how to stay healthy while traveling

It's easy to throw our routines out the window when we travel, but that often leads to getting rundown and sick. Follow these 5 tips below for easy ways to stay healthy while you're on the go.

Hydrate

Whether you are traveling by a plane, train or car, staying hydrated is key. Make sure you bring a portable water bottle with you so you can refill it anywhere you go. Once you get through airport security, refill your water bottle at a filling station (most airports are well-equipped with these). Continue to stay hydrated from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep. Staying hydrated will help prevent sickness, fight inflammation and give you glowing skin.

Sleep
Traveling can be exhausting. You may be crossing various time zones, carrying your luggage around, or hustling from place to place. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep every night, especially if you are fighting jet lag. The amount of recommended sleep for most adults is between six and nine hours, but traveling can often throw a wrench in your normal sleep schedule. Do your best to get at least eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. If you have trouble sleeping in a new environment, bring ear plugs and a sleep mask to avoid distractions and try using lavender essential oil which promotes relaxation and restful sleep.

Bring Snacks
Being prepared is key for staying healthy while traveling. You never know if a flight could be delayed, or you’re stuck in traffic. If you’re unfamiliar with a city and don’t know where the nearest grocery store is, having snacks on hand will keep you from getting hangry and will help you avoid grabbing something quick and convenient that may not be the healthiest option. Pre-packaged snacks like nuts or bars are great, or you can prepare your own snacks at home before you leave.

Movement
The best thing to do while traveling is move around. If you know your favorite workout studio has another location, try to book a class or check out the hotel gym. If you don’t have access to a gym, but still want to follow a set fitness plan, then download a workout ahead of time to access from your phone. If you want to give yourself a break from your typical workout routine, then make it a priority to walk places. The best way to discover a new city is to walk around and explore!

Balance Out Your Meals

Traveling is all about being open minded and getting outside of your comfort zone. Most cities and countries have a unique cuisine and part of the fun of being in a new place is trying new restaurants and immersing yourself in the food and culture. Don’t stress about overindulging in meals, just focus on getting enough fruits and vegetables throughout the day. Make it a priority to eat foods that will fuel you for a full day. We like having a smoothie for breakfast to ensure your day starts off with a dose of antioxidants and fiber.
