Let’s face it, the boutique fitness industry is booming and can be somewhat overwhelming to navigate! There are seemingly thousands of new studios popping up all over the country, each boasting its own unique workout, and yet it can become all too easy to stick to the same ones over and over again. Why is that?
Maybe it’s partially because we like to stay within our comfort zones or maybe because we just aren’t sure which of these crazy new workouts is actually worth the fee attached to it?
For those of you who live in NYC, your fitness choices are seemingly endless. As the fitness mecca of the U.S. (and maybe the world?) there are SO many fun, strange, and intriguing workouts to pick from. You can do naked yoga, you can get fit while juggling, and you can even try surfing indoors!
If you only have time to try a few new workouts, we’ve narrowed it down to the following because they are both fun and functional:
Underwater Cycling at Aqua Studio
What it is: A cycling experience while being submerged in four feet of water that harmoniously pairs the challenge of high-intensity cardio and full-body toning with the natural healing properties of salt water.
What to wear: A bathing suit! Preferably a one-piece that is comfortable and supportive
What it costs: Intro class is $35
Why try it: Not only is it super fun and challenging, but it’s also amazing for pregnant women, athletic cross-training, and anyone who is getting back in shape post-injury or surgery.
Body Cardio Resistance training at Spiderbands
What it is: Centered around suspension and aerial concepts, Spiderbands® is a fast-paced total body cardio resistance workout that leverages gravity and your own body weight, to integrate the various systems of the body in an effective and innovative way. There are multiple classes to choose from, including ones that integrate kickboxing and circuit training!
What to wear: Something ultra sweat wicking!
What it costs: First class is $35
Why try it: When else can you pretend to be Spiderman? For real though, it’s a full body workout and incorporates “compound movements” that work each part of your body simultaneously and differentially -- which means you can expect to be very sore after your first class!
Rock Climbing at Brooklyn Boulders
What it is: The Intro to Climbing class provides foundational coaching in a small-group setting where you’ll meet new climbers and receive expert instruction on the basics of climbing. Instruction takes place on both ropes and boulder
What to wear: Something comfortable and flexible (like yoga pants) and socks. Just be sure you’re not afraid to get your clothes dirty… there will be lots of chalk on them by the end of the class
What it costs: It’s $49 for non-members and only $25 for members
Why try it: Rock climbing is a full-body workout that tests your strength, flexibility, endurance and balance like nothing else! It’s super fun, and once you know the basics, you’ll be able to take your skills outside of the studio to the great outdoors!
